the collaborative dress

Lucy and I have finally collaborated on a dress. I let her help me through the entire process from picking out the pattern all the way to the embellishments. I received the book, Carefree Clothes for Girls for Christmas. It is full of goodness. Lucy chose the pattern called Dress with Lace Doily. Once she picked the pattern I went online to see if there were any reviews of the pattern and came across a sew along group for the book and the April project was for this dress. Perfect! Lucy then went into my fabric collection and picked out a print that I have had for several years. I cut out the pieces a few weeks ago and just got around to sewing it today.
In the book the dress is solid white and embellished with lace doilies. Oddly, I do not own any white fabric, so we had to go in a different direction. When it came time to pick out something to put on the dress, Lucy was so excited. I was such a proud mama listening to her come up with all kinds of things we could do to the dress (once we got past wanting to put glitter on it). She actually came up with some great ideas. This is what we settled on...
I made this yo yo over a year ago and it was a great match. Lucy had a ball picking out a button for the center. It was fun watching her sort the buttons by maybes and not quite rights. She was a hoot! I look forward to the day when she can help me even more with sewing and design! You can look at other photos from the sew along here.
And speaking of sew alongs, I am so looking forward to Kids Clothes Week over at elsie marley. She has several posts of links to great patterns and tutorials. I am so excited!

Oh I remember that yo-yo!!! Glad you found a permanent home for it! I love this!!! You did a superb job as always! One day I'll get to do stuff like this!

So regarding the glitter thing, I have some green glitter thread!!! Yes, it is polyester, but it is also very glittery...compromise?!?! :)

I was just over at flickr asking you about that very yo-yo and button....then....I noticed...you had your blog link ;-) there to tell me all the details. Sorry about that!

How incredibly well that yo-yo MATCHES, especially with the time involved. Impressive!

I also am impressed that your daughter was so excited to help you choose and plan....I would love that, too. My daughter doesn't have the 'staying power' for longer than a few moments. Such a nice thing for the two of you....you're doing something really right there!

I joined the Elsie Marley week, too. Such a great idea. Anyway -- I'm glad you're part of the Carefree Sewalong. BOTH of you. ;-)

How reminiscent of days gone-by with Grandma and a little blonde doll named Amy! What wonderful talents to have---designing and sewing. And being a loving mom!
