goats on the roof

While we were in Helen this past weekend, we took a few minutes to stop by a place called Goats on the Roof (even though it was rainy and chilly, hence the dark photos). When I saw a sign announcing that it was up ahead, I assumed it was just the crazy name of some souvenir shop or something. While it was somewhat a souvenir shop, it did indeed have goats on the roof!

You could even feed the goats using foot power! They had these bicycles rigged up with feeding cups. You put your food in the cup, pedaled away and the cup would be delivered to the goat. The kids loved it!

{I love the look of determination on Lucy's face.}

{The cup rising to greet the goat}

{The goats were more than willing to partake of the food.}

They also had some mining set up for free. The man working there assured Larkin he wouldn't find anything. Way to dash the hopes of the young, fella. However, as you can see above, Michael celebrated his discovery of some gold.

So often while traveling I see places on the side of the road where I wish we could stop. I love when we can take the time to visit little gems like this. I guess I love to feed our curiosity. Not to mention, the benefit of just getting the kids out of the car. You never know what sorts of things you will find. Like these lovely folks just up the road at Fred's Famous Peanuts.

Do you like to stop at places like this? Do you have any favorites?

I think it's the little places that you'd otherwise pass, that can be the best for building memories!

My husband is a strict "point A to point B" person". No stops. You can go to the bathroom only if he's already stopping for gas. I was so curious about the roof goats on instagram, but never asked.

We went to a mining place in Blue Ridge where you could buy bags of dirt spiked with semi-precious stones and other treasures for the kids to pan through. Not authentic, but good for kids with no patience.

Hilarious! Goats on the Roof for real. We never stop to sight see on our trips, although that could be because we only ever go to Gastonia or Durham and we are traveling with young children. Getting out of the car as little as possible is the goal. So glad you guys had so much fun!

oh my word, goats on the roof?! I love it! How cute. I also love to stop at interesting little places along the way. Fortunately, Scott is all about taking a stop and getting the kids out of the car. We found a couple of great stops along the Nantahala on our way home from Georgia.

When I was a child, my family often visited relatives in Jacksonville, Fla. Somewhere just over the Florida/Georgia line was a small, small "zoo" with interesting animals and a "jungle." There was also a gift/souvenir shop and we would stop there either on the way to visit or on our return home. I loved those times with my parents and my little brothers! I am sure you have seen some of the photos of us. I will always cherish those memories!
