grandma's cookies

this week i have really missed my grandma. when i am really missing her, i like to throw myself into doing something she taught me to do. usually this is sewing or baking. today it was baking. since i wanted to make some cookies for the basket for the family reunion, i decided to bake my grandma's sand tarts (funny, we always called these wedding cookies, but on the recipe from her it says sand tarts). i remember as a kid when she would make these. i would eat so many of them! after you bake them you put them in a big bowl of powdered sugar to coat them. my grandma would always leave them in the bowl, so it was like searching for little treasures in the sugar. she made these cookies for so many occasions. everyone looked forward to her making her divinity candy, including me, but when she made these, my heart sang. my grandma was always willing to share a recipe, so i am going to share this one with you. i hope you enjoy them as much as me.

Grandma Brooks' Sand Tarts

Ingredients:
2 sticks of butter
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tbs. water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts

Directions:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Mix all ingredients together.
Roll into small balls (about the size of a quarter, only not flat) and place on cookie sheet.
Bake for 15-20 minutes.
While the cookies are still warm, toss them in powdered sugar.
Makes about 48 cookies.

Thank you for sharing your grandmother's recipe. My grandma gave me a bunch of her recipes in a special binder a couple of years ago. While she is still alive, I cherish her recipes and making them always makes me feel very, very happy.
