improvements : part 1

i have some exciting posts this week (at least i find them exciting and one in particular is very exciting). i guess that my birthday post was exciting. but, the exciting posts i am talking about involve some improvements. you are probably wondering what in the world those plastic packs are in the photo. well, last week we visited the local dollar store in my hometown. the kids were in need of a game at grandma's house. we bought a version of tic-tac-toe that has a frame with three rows of flippers that have an x side, and o side and a blank side. you play by tossing the sandbags at the flippers. you win by getting a whole row of your letter (just like traditional tic-tac-toe). the sandbags that came with the game are above. they are boring plastic and they are too big for the game. they constantly get stuck on the flippers. so, for a little project while we are home i decided to make some new and functional sandbags from some scrap fabric i have. i sewed them this morning and used the sand from the original bags. here are the new and improved sandbags...
maybe these are not the most exciting thing ever, but they sure are cute. and tic-tac-toe  will be much more enjoyable with these. the next improvement that happened today was this loaf of banana bread...
you may be asking, "how is banana bread an improvement?" well, it is an improvement from the rotting bananas in the fruit bowl! here is the simple and yummy recipe:

Banana Bread

Ingredients
1 stick butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
3 very ripe bananas, mashed
pinch of salt
1 cup chopped pecans

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
2. Cream sugar and butter together.
3. Add eggs one at a time and beat well.
4. Add bananas and beat well.
5. Fold in flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and pecans.
6. Bake in loaf pan for one hour.

oh, and i repaired a vintage throw pillow that has been in the mending pile for like a year. that would have been a boring photo. but believe me, it is an improvement!

You are so cute! I too prefer banana bread to rotting bananas! I love your tic-tac-toe sandbags. I remember playing that when I was a kid. sigh....

good for you. doesn't it feel good to tie up loose ends and finish off things that are sitting at the back of your brain (or sewing table)?
I finally finished a skirt that has been sitting on my sewing machine acting as a sewing machine cover for a LONG time. It actually looked pretty nice as a cover so I may make one in the same fabrics!
