so, what does a serger have to do with facing my fear? well, until today i was afraid of it. that's right. i was afraid of my serger. several years ago when my grandma stopped being able to sew, she gave it to me. i was so excited. i used it quite a bit when i was younger. i would find scraps at my grandma's house and practice my skills. i loved how the fabric would glide through so effortlessly and once past the needles, it would come out all nicely bound with the excess trimmed off. pure magic, i thought. so, you can see why i was so happy when i got it. i took it to the repair shop just two blocks from my house and had it serviced. i even went out and bought four new spools of thread for it. i then put it in the corner of my sewing room and left it. and then when i rearranged my room, i moved it to another corner. and left it. and there it has been sitting for at least five years...until today.
i decided that today was the day i would face my fear. so what was i so afraid of (especially since i had used this machine dozens of times)? threading it. i had no idea how. i know how silly that sounds. but it is true.
so, i did what any reasonable person would do. i took it straight to the aforementioned repair shop and sheepishly put it on the counter and asked the amazing repairman if he would thread it for me. that's right. i am not ashamed. i wasn't even too embarrassed when he took the wrapping off of the thread and since it had been sitting so long, the color from the plastic had actually rubbed off onto the thread. i just held my head high and praised the man several times while he threaded the machine. i then brought it back home and used it immediately. i love it. i am looking around for things to serge. i am no longer afraid! nothing can stop me now! i just hope it doesn't come unthreaded...

good for you Amy! I know how to thread my serger but I'm still tenative about using it. I need to face my fear too and just go for it!
Whoa.. that thing looks like a space aged robot. Does it talk and do dishes too? I am impressed.
No shame I did the same thing too! The repairman then made me sit down and learn how to thread it. I have refered several people to him since. Glad you have your serger working, happy sewing.
I did that with my new Bernina! I'm still a little afraid of it :)
That is a super cool old Baby lock though, you are very lucky to have it.
how exciting! i have no idea what a serger even does. and i still have to get out my sewing book to remember how to thread a bobbin every time mine runs out on my plain jane sewing machine. sigh. fun, fun, fun!
This is a fear that I need to conquor. My poor serger has been so neglected...
I have been dreaming of getting a serger because I have been really into making clothes lately.
Good for you facing your fear and going for it.
Have fun!
i wonder if you could get your hands on a threading diagram....at my old work we had one which was super helpful!
brilliant! okay, so when can i come over and play with it too? and by play with it...i mean, hand off projects for you to do cuz i'm scared of that thing. i might break it...then you'll have something new to blog on. hee hee
I'll tell you what - that looks scary to me too!
Why are sergers so dang scary! At least you went to a shop to have it rethreaded. I have to succumb to my husband's constant genius and ask him to fix it. He's a better housewife than I am!
I totally understand your fear. My vintage 1960s sewing machine scares me...and the button hole attachment? very scary. But I'm slowly, slowly trying.
Oh I always wanted a serger, I have a babylock at home but not a serger.. I bet you are loving this!
LOL...threading is a nightmare isn't it ? Very useful piece of equipment to have around though :)
