got it covered

after a couple of weeks with no ironing board cover, and using and old quilted pillow sham on top of the board for ironing, i finally got around to making a cover. it was quite easy to do and i love the result. here is a quick breakdown of how i did it (this is in no way a tutorial)...
  1. lay out two layers of high loft batting, place the ironing board upside down on the batting, and cut it out to size.
  2. baste the batting onto the top of the board to prevent slippage.
  3. lay out the fabric for the cover, place the ironing board upside down on the fabric, and cut the fabric 2.5 inches larger than the ironing board.
  4. turn in and sew a .5 inch hem around the edge of the cover leaving a small opening at the back of the cover.
  5. thread kitchen twine through the hem using a safety pin.
  6. place the new cover on the board, pull to tighten, and tie the twine to hold it in place.
  7. iron, iron, iron!
but folks, i couldn't stop with just one project yesterday. nope. i had to have three projects. with all the bustle about using your own shopping bags, i knew that making my own bags should be a breeze. we have one that i love from trader joe's. it is a vinyl one with a round bottom. i have had this oilcloth laying on the shelf for a couple of years. i made tote bags for my mom and michael's mom a few years ago. yesterday, i realized how perfect it would be for reusable shopping bags. well, with a little effort and some rusty trigonometry skills, i came up with a design for my own round bottom shopping bags with contrasting bottoms. here are the two that i made yesterday...

i have a bit more of the oilcloth, so i will probably make two more of them. they were quite easy and actually fun to make. i will probably try out this pattern with some other types of fabric, too. oh, and i actually used them today at the grocery store and they were perfect! when we were getting in the car to leave the house, i had the bags on my shoulder. noticing them, a guy who was walking by asked, "you headed to the beach?" i wish...

Great shopping bags, Amy! Gorgeous and practical - exactly what I like a project to be.

Such a pretty ironing board cover, too. Lovely floral fabric.

Thank you for the tutorial! And this is seriously one of the prettiest ironing board covers I've seen! The bags are great, too! So now, my list of inspiration from you includes: 1) sew some cute "little girl" dresses for myself; 2) ironing board cover for my mini board; 3) make reusable market bags. Whew! Will ya cut it out already? :)
