happy valentine's day

i hope everyone's valentine's day is happy so far. i know mine is. what better way to start the day than with a lovely handcrafted pancake from my husband?
do you know what else i am happy about?  i am getting my hair cut today. i know this news is not all that exciting for you...but, i don't think i could be more excited if i were getting a new car. you see, i usually get my hair cut every six weeks (i have the type of hair that is quite unruly and tends to grow out rather than down. if only pyramid shaped hair was all the rage...) well, due to budget cuts, i am about eleven weeks past that six weeks point. i will let you imagine how large my hair is. just to give you an idea of how pathetic i am, when the salon called yesterday to remind me of my appointment, i thought she said the appointment was an hour earlier than i had scheduled. i got so excited, only to realize i had misheard her. i need help. but, let us move on to other important business. i have been sewing!
lucy is now in her "little princess bed" (to the rest of us, it is her crib converted into a toddler bed). well, every little princess needs a nice princess pillow, right? yesterday afternoon i let her come over to the fabulous fabric wall and pick out fabric for her pillow. while she napped, i whipped up a pillow case for her. the project was simple, but i decided to try a different technique on the seams. since i have a serger, but am afraid to go near it (ok, actually i have no idea how to thread it), i needed a way to make the seams tidy so they will not unravel. so, here is how i made tidy seams. please bear with me, as this is my first tutorial.

once i got the measurements for my completed pillowcase i added a 3/4 inch seam allowance to all sides. then, rather than sew the right sides together, i sewed the wrong sides together using a 1/4 inch seam.
*i just realized this photo may be confusing. the purple trim on the pillow case is folded over, thus making both sides of the trim "right sides". but this is technically the wrong side of this piece. i hope that makes sense.

then, i turned the pillowcase inside out (with right sides together). and, after ironing, i sewed the seams using a 1/2 seam. which results in this being the inside seams...
and here is the completed pillowcase....
it is very simple, but lucy is quite pleased with it. happy valentine's day everyone!

What a cute pillowcase. I love the fabrics. I love making pillow cases as gifts for my kids friends. Sometimes I include a book gift cert too. For a very small child it would be cute to just wrap around a night time story book.
